Dr. Marcio Rocha Mello, Ph.D., petroleum geologist with expertise in petroleum exploration, petroleum systems and petroleum geochemistry. Dr. Mello worked for 24 years in PETROBRAS, where he developed highly specialized studies about petroleum systems for all of the sedimentary basins of Brazil, Africa and the whole Latin America.
Petroleum system studies outside Brazil were focused in Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. He also worked in most of the African Basins, including Libya, Nigeria, Gabon, Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Angola and Namibia. In PETROBRAS, he performed extensive work on the characterization of the petroleum systems of the whole onshore and offshore Brazilian sedimentary basins, having been the founder and head of the first center of excellence of Petrobras-CEGEQ. In 2000, Dr. Mello left Petrobras and founded Analytical Solutions (AS) and Petroleum and Environment Geosciences (PEG), in Rio de Janeiro, both considered in 2004 the leading petroleum services laboratory and companies in Brazil. In 2004, he founded HRT-Petroleum considered today a leading service petroleum exploration and environmental company in Latin America. The company encompasses high technology methodologies ranging from Satellite oil slick detection to molecular geochemistry for oil DNA.
Dr. Mello was the founder and first president of the Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologist (ABGP), past President of AAPG Latin America and present President of the Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologist (ABGP). In 1998 he received the Distinguished AAPG Achievement Award and in 2000 the Robert H. Dott Sr. Memorial Award for AAPG Memoir 73, considered as the best Memoir publication of AAPG in the year 2000.
He is professor of petroleum geochemistry and petroleum systems in several Universities in Brazil having published more than 200 papers about geology and geochemistry linked to petroleum exploration all around the world.
Presently he is president of HRT and responsible for leading the petroleum system expert group of HRT and its associated companies.
