What’s the process:

We see a future that is unpredictable but likely to be very different from the conventional path most people expect. This workshop will create a time and a place to develop and exchange ideas about how people (especially American people) should be planning their finances and their lives for that future. This will not be a conversation about physics or geology, nor about public policy, but about how individuals, families, and possibly small businesses and communities should prepare for, and hopefully thrive during, the creation of this new post-peak world.   Goals, dreams, and values can be met even in times of material challenges, and we will talk about how to thrive as people during what is likely to be a time of declining material prosperity.

We’ll start with brief orientation talks on peak oil, financial planning, and personal change.  The participants will then create the specific agenda for the workshop themselves. Using the Open Space Meeting format, the group will decide on topics and sessions that fit the goals and interests of the participants, with potentially a dozen or so breakout sessions to choose from.  These sessions will be discussions, not presentations, since each of us provides expertise, curiosity, and wisdom.  (One of our rules: there are no passengers!)

After several round of breakouts, dinner on your own (as an opportunity to continue the conversations on the 16th Street Mall with new-found friends), and another set of breakout sessions Saturday evening, we will gather Sunday morning to evaluate what we have discovered and outline recommendations that can be used by planners, coaches, organizers, and the general public as guides for the future.  This material will be presented to the ASPO conference later in the day.

The program will begin at 1PM Saturday October 10, continue until about 9PM Saturday (including the dinner break about 5:30), and reconvene from 8AM to 9:45 Sunday morning.  We will have a snack break at 3PM Saturday; otherwise food is on your own.

The ASPO-USA Conference itself will begin Sunday morning and run through Tuesday evening.  Details and registration for that can be found at APSO-USA.org.
