I agree with Mr. Maxwell and add that supply and price constraints on fossil fuels will bite hard before the end of the next decade, well before adequate alternatives are in place. The only hope will be aggressive nuclear expansion for reliable base load power production. Wasting resources on cap&trade or sequestration is squandering resources we need to manage fossils depletion and develop/deploy alternatives.

2 quibbles: CTL is working well in South Africa, and has been for a long time (Google "SASOL"), albeit with much pollution. The other point I take issue with is his dissing of wind power. I've seen very successful installations, and I doubt Boone Pickens would support it if it were such a loser.

CHARLIE MAXWELL HAS ALWAYS, DOES NOW, AND WILL CONTINUE, TO TELL THE TRUTH, OR AT THE VERY LEAST THE WAY HE SEES IT, AND IN MY MIND, HE'S THE BEST.

BUT, AS IN THE PAST, NOW, AND PROBABLY THE FUTURE, TOO... VERY FEW LISTEN..AND THAT IS WHY WE ARE HEADING FOR BIG TROUBLE. (AND ALSO WHY MANY MORE WILL MAKE HUGE FORTUNES IN ENERGY IN THE YEARS AHEAD.) JACK

"By crushing demand, we are in effect gaining two more years, maybe three, in which we in the consuming world have added to our time before the peak, and could take good advantage of, since the peak is right upon us-I have it still at 2015 for all liquids."

It seems to me that since we don't have a clue as of today as how to solve the energy dilemma why does "gaining two years, maybe three" have any significance? This is surreal.

Henry Groppe who has been a very spot on oil analyst(with oil price prediction both on the upside and downside) says China is going to be replacing some of the oil they are currently using by building more coal electricity plants. Currently the world uses 15 million bbl/d of oil for stationary energy purposes ie electricity and warming. If China and other countries use less of the 15 million bbl/d would that not suggest that the oil prices would be more benign(Groppe says $65-$85 next decade) for oil in the near future(next 7 to 8 years). Also Charlie Munger at Wesco (they invested in China's BYD company)says he has never been so optomistic for mankind because of the emerging developements in photovotaic technology. These two gentlemen believe in peak oil and they have been very successful in their fields. It is at least something to investigate further. Might I also mention that Mr. Rapier at the oil drum web site said he agreed with the logic that Mr. Groppe presented in a speech Mr. Groppe made at an ASPO conference in 2005 (?). BYD by the way has 95% of worldwide market for batteries that go into cell phones and other electronic products.
