Getting Marcellus production to market is hampered by the need to build connection and transmission infrastructure. Gas @$4.00 is not attractive, but gas plus NGL's is. Now there is additional interest being hyped in the Utica Shale formation which will be even more costly per well. My Marcellus decline curve analysis has your described early drop off, but may have a shallower long term decline. I don't see 40 year wells. Pa royalties rarely exceed 15% with 12.5% being more common. I'm looking at under 5 years for 50% production and no more than 10 years for 80+% production. Drillers in PA are now focused on areas with proven NGL's to raise revenue per well and proximity to transmission.

Hummm....looks to me like a great window exists for conventional gas plays that actually do very well @ $4.00 gas...a secure window - Shale Players can't drill wells that payout at $4.00. gas - conventional players continue to earn traditional mainstream historical returns at $4.00 gas that it's hard to argue with........made and continue to make this a grate business! My only concern is governmental subsidies when things hit the fan ( Shale players get in same ditch as Enron and seek to be bailed out)

Dear Mr. Berman

Do you have the data set from which you based this article. This is so important as New York State begins to allow gas fracking in the state. Thank you for your article
