The Iraq War easily beats out many on the list. Whether the primary reason was oil or not, the invasion/occupation of Iraq was a signature moment in the budding awareness of the general population's understanding of the vast importance of oil in US foreign policy. Between the flimsy excuses concocted to launch the invasion to the Cheney Energy Task Force/Halliburton connection, and after the "man are they stupid" silliness weakened a bit, people were forced to ask, "Why Iraq?". It was in that dynamic that Peak Oil got its foothold. It made talking about oil, and discussing its implications something vivid, not just the abstract subject of commodities traders. More than anything, it made Peak Oil plausible (much more so than just a price run-up) by induction.

I look at the list of points and the ones that strike me the most are those from the Guardian and the quote from Total's CEO. But, having joined the Peak Oil debate somewhat late I now find myself struggling to believe that Iraq will not delay the onset of Peak Oil for a good many years.
Frankly, I need to see some good arguments, and stats, to lend any real credibility to a continuing case for Peak Oil in the next 5-10 years.
