Oh how I wish these words could reach the mainstream and be a rallying cry for fundamental changes.

Sadly, that won't happen; just yet that is.

In contemplating the future, I hope many honest and courageous leaders like Stewart Udall will emerge. And by leaders, I mean not only elected and very public ones, but perhaps more importantly, family leaders, neighborhood leaders, and community leaders.

He was a great man and a true public servant. In this 'greed is good' era, such leaders are all too rare.
I can't add much to his comments, except to give my opinion that long before the physical shortage of oil might threaten our very survival, the high cost of oil will devastate the economy by obliterating demand for many non-essential goods and services that presently employ many millions of people. I doubt that either our capitalist economic system, or democratic political system, will be able to survive the very high rate of unempolyment that will result from such a huge demand contraction. I fear that, with the rapid growth of oil demand in China, we will find out a lot sooner than most people now think.
